NovoFy, an AI biotech founded by protein engineers, announced its launch today with a singular focus: solving problems in the generation of high-quality proteins for research and therapeutic applications.
The company launches at a moment when generative biology has fundamentally changed how the industry approaches protein design. Google DeepMind’s AlphaFold 2 demonstrated that the structure of an individual protein can be predicted with accuracy comparable to that of empirical methods such as X-ray crystallography and cryo-EM. NovoFy’s founding premise is that structure, however important, is only one of the many properties that compose a protein.
Developability decides what is useful
What determines whether a protein is truly useful is developability. A developable protein can be produced at reasonable cost, remains stable for as long as it is required, and is safe for clinical use. Those properties, not structure alone, decide whether a candidate becomes a reliable research reagent or a viable therapeutic. NovoFy was founded to understand and to generate them.
NovoFy’s team brings more than 20 years of combined experience in the discovery and development of first-in-class protein therapeutics, including antibodies, multispecific antibodies, and cytokines, among others. That work has given the team a deep understanding of the molecular basis that mediates protein expression, solubility, thermostability, binding, specificity, and immunogenicity.
That collective knowledge drove the team to build machine-learning models and filters that design and select the candidates worth testing in the lab. They are the foundation of NovoFlow, NovoFy’s platform.
From design to production
Models can generate far more candidates than a lab can test, and that creates a bottleneck at the bench. NovoFlow, NovoFy’s platform, is built to deliver selected candidates that meet the design goals. We go from design to production, bypassing the labor-intensive screening step in the lab.
Daniel Keri, PhD, Co-founder and CTO, NovoFy
Rather than presenting bench scientists with an unmanageable pool of possible designs, NovoFlow applies NovoFy’s models and filters to narrow that pool before a single experiment is run, prioritizing candidates whose developability profile matches the program’s goals.
When disciplines collide, great leaps forward become possible, and so do the gaps at the interface where they meet. We strongly believe the founding team requires depth across all three: AI, structural biology, and drug discovery. You cannot provide a solution to a problem you do not know.
Fernando Garces, PhD, Co-founder and CEO, NovoFy
NovoFy sits precisely at that intersection. By pairing protein-engineering expertise with purpose-built machine learning, the company aims to shift protein design from generating as many candidates as possible to generating the right ones: candidates that are worth the cost and time of experimental validation, and that can be manufactured and advanced with confidence.
NovoFy is now engaging with research organizations and therapeutic developers seeking developable protein candidates. Additional information is available at novofy.bio.
